Celebrating World Water Day with Kayak Waterways Cleanup

In commemoration of World Water Day, our team embarked on a waterways cleanup along the Kallang Basin route last Friday. Despite being a small group, we managed to collect 40 kg worth of trash, contributing to the preservation of our waterways. Singapore’s history with water is fascinating, transforming from a water-deprived nation to a global leader in water management.

Two fun facts about Singapore’s water:
1.     Two-thirds of Singapore’s land surface is used for water catchment.
2.     Singapore has implemented the Four National Taps strategy. These taps represent different sources of water: local catchment water, imported water, reclaimed water (NEWater), and desalinated water. This diversified approach reduces the country’s reliance on any single source and ensures a stable water supply even during periods of drought or disruption. This innovative strategy has been pivotal in ensuring Singapore’s water resilience.

Empowering Youth Through Inclusive Initiatives: Our Support for YMCA of Singapore

At our recent event, we had the honor of presenting a donation to the YMCA of Singapore in support of its inspiring “Inclusivity through the Heart of Food” campaign. This contribution resonates deeply with our commitment to promoting equal opportunities and fostering positive societal change.

During the cheque presentation ceremony, we were honored to be joined by Mr. Tony Soh, President of YMCA, in conjunction with the formal welcome of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as YMCA’s Patron in-chief, marking a commemorative occasion.

One of the primary reasons we chose to support YMCA is their dedication to programs like the Vocational and Soft Skills Programme (VaSSP). This initiative plays a crucial role in empowering youths from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in today’s world.

By investing in YMCA’s initiatives, we believe that we are contributing to the transformation of lives and the empowerment of youths to realize their full potential. We are proud to be part of such a meaningful cause and look forward to witnessing the positive impact it will continue to have on our community.  Together, we unite in advocating for inclusivity and strive towards a brighter future for all.

Spreading Joy and Community Spirit: SUSS-Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme’s Chinese New Year Outreach 2024

In the spirit of spreading joy during Chinese New Year, the SUSS-Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme brought cheer through three initiatives, creating memorable moments that transcended generational boundaries and fostered a sense of togetherness and inclusivity:

Celebration with Orange Valley Woodlands Peak Active Ageing Centre (AAC) – 19 Feb: The programme team joined the AAC for a celebratory event. The atmosphere was excited and joyous as volunteers and residents came together. There were pre-recorded greeting videos, an introduction to traditional Chinese exercise (Ping Shuai Gong), creative craft activities and photo opportunities with Chingay props. VR headsets and LOVOT robots were also introduced to enhance well-being through innovative technology. The event brought smiles and strengthened community bonds among participants.

Celebration with SingHealth Outram Community Hospital – 21 Feb: The programme continued its mission by hosting an event at the hospital. Participants engaged in warm-up crafts and showcases, followed by a Chinese New Year song sing-along that created a harmonious atmosphere. A craft activity provided a therapeutic outlet for creativity. VR headsets and LOVOTs showcased how technology can enhance well-being of seniors in healthcare settings. The shared experiences and communal spirit symbolised the ongoing mission to promote holistic health and community.

SUSS-PA Chingay Watch Party – 24 Feb: In collaboration with PA, a large-scale Chingay Watch Party was hosted, attended by over 1500 elderly participants across 28 organisations. The festivities were graced by esteemed guests, including Mayor Ms. Low Yen Ling, PA Director Ms. Tan Swee Leng, and SUSS NSHD Dean Dr. Lim Lee Ching.

Nunchi Marine gifted a total of 118 sets of Yusheng, 53 sets of calligraphy, 15 sets of CNY goodies, 1370 lightsticks, and 2110 limited edition red-coloured Age Well T-shirts to 30 centres, ensuring that the festive spirit reached every corner. The event featured a diverse and culturally rich programme, including icebreakers, greetings from programme heads, lion dances, drumming performances, handicraft demos, and a CNY sing-along by Cedar Girls’ School Choir, leading up to a spectacular Chingay Party live screening from the F1 Pit. We were glad that these events created lasting connections through shared experiences of celebrations, crafts, performances and community spirit.

Nourishing Communities: Our Commitment to Advocate for an Inspiring & Affordable Hawker Delights Stall

Amid our fast-paced lives, it is truly heartwarming to come across individuals who go beyond the ordinary. One such inspiring person is Ms Hani Isnin-Racine. She has been serving affordably priced food at $2.50 from her Jalan Kukoh stall, despite rising costs. Her unwavering commitment to serving the lower-income community in her estate has surely warmed the hearts of those in need of a nourishing meal.

So moved and inspired by her selflessness, that we have pledged to support her by alleviating one of her major burdens – the cost of rental and utilities. By covering one year’s rental expenses, we hope to provide some relief and enable her to continue serving the community. It is our small way of expressing appreciation for her kindness.

If you happen to be in the area, do go and support Ms Hani if you can. Let us stand together as a community, reach out or contribute in any way you can.

PS. We are thrilled to learn that she has been nominated Singaporean of the Year 2023 Finalist by The Straits Times. Truly deserving.

Empower Tomorrow’s Leaders: Support SportCares’ Holiday Sports Program

Many children from low-income families face academic setbacks due to limited access to learning opportunities, especially during school holidays. Enrichment courses, which are often unavailable to them, contribute to a growing educational divide. Additionally, the lack of parental support, frequently stemming from parents’ work commitments, further compounds the challenges these children encounter.

This long December school holiday, we had a wonderful opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of children from low-income families through the SportCares initiative. We believe in the power of sports not just for physical well-being but also as a tool to bridge educational gaps and provide a supportive environment during the school holidays.

Nunchi Marine participated in the fundraising challenge, contributing $10,000 to SportCares’ School Holiday Programme (SHP) – Bowling SHP @ Orchid Bowl. This initiative was organized to engage children from low-income families, providing them with a meaningful sports experience during the extended December holiday, enriching their month-long break through the spirit of sports.

In Support of World Mental Health Month in October: Fostering Hope to Those in Despair

In observance of World Mental Health Month, which occurs every October, Nunchi Marine directed our October philanthropic efforts towards Samaritans of Singapore (SOS), a non-profit organisation dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention.

Singapore has experienced an upward trend in suicide cases over the years, with 2022 marking the highest number in more than two decades. This increase has been particularly notable among young people and the elderly, with the stigma surrounding mental health being one of the potential contributing factors.

The pain experienced by the families of those affected by suicide is truly devastating and unfathomable. The presence of mental health stigma often serves as a hindrance and acts as a formidable barrier for individuals who are in distress and need help.  This stigma can lead to tragic outcomes, resulting in life-altering consequences for themselves and their loved ones.

SOS, established in 1969, is dedicated to averting these tragedies by offering confidential emotional support to individuals grappling with crisis, contemplating suicide, or impacted by it.

We stand in solidarity with SOS and their unceasing efforts to provide care for those who suffer in silence, while also aspiring to eradicate the societal stigma surrounding mental health in a culture where high societal expectations prevail.
