SUSS-Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme: Masako Wakamiya’s Inspiring Journey and Launch of the LION Portal

At 87 years young, Ms Masako Wakamiya has defied age-related stereotypes by developing an app aimed at empowering seniors through technology. She was hosted by Dr Kelvin Tan (PhD) from Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) and the Nunchi Marine Age Well Programme.

The event kicked off with a lively drumming performance by seniors from ASPIRE55, followed by the launch of the LION Portal (Lifecourse in Online Narratives), a platform designed to help seniors share their rich and varied life experiences through compelling narratives.

Though Masako-san comes across as a demure and soft-spoken lady, her presence is larger than life. Her enthusiasm for technology and her unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of seniors is both inspiring and infectious.

Her journey serves as a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue one’s passions and make a positive impact on the world around us.

A Heartwarming Movie Day with YWCA’s Meals on Wheels Seniors

It was a heartwarming moment seeing our team interact and enjoy a movie with about 60 seniors, some of whom were beneficiaries of the YWCA Meals on Wheels programme.

Many of these seniors live alone and come from low-income backgrounds, making this event not just a movie treat but also a rare social outing. The film “Money No Enough 3” was a fitting choice, resonating deeply with the seniors thanks to its local settings and use of familiar dialects. The shared laughter and conversations during the screening showed that simple acts of kindness can brighten and uplift someone’s day.

Thank you YWCA for the invitation and the opportunity to be part of a meaningful event!

An Exciting Collaboration with YMCA Singapore and Sony Pictures: Hosting The Garfield Movie Premiere for a Great Cause

On May 18th, YMCA of Singapore joined forces with Sony Pictures to host the exclusive premiere of the eagerly awaited The Garfield Movie, with the support from Nunchi Marine. This special event went beyond entertainment, serving as a platform to support a noble cause—the YMCA Vocational and Soft Skills Programme (VaSSP).

We were particularly pleased to be part of this remarkable event by donating to the YMCA VaSSP. This initiative is close to our hearts as it plays a crucial role in empowering individuals by equipping them with essential skills needed for their personal and professional growth. The VaSSP focuses on providing vocational training and soft skills development, helping participants to enhance their employability and gain confidence in their abilities.

The atmosphere was electric as families, friends, and supporters of the YMCA gathered to watch the hilarious antics of everyone’s favorite lasagna-loving cat, Garfield. During the event, we were deeply honored to receive a token of appreciation from Mr. Kenneth Tan, Vice President of YMCA Singapore.

We hope that our contribution to the VaSSP can help make a positive impact on the lives of those involved in the programme. It is our firm belief that through education and skill development, individuals can unlock their full potential and create better futures for themselves.

Building Bonds During our Company Retreat in Taipei

Throwback to our company retreat to Taipei on 28 March – an incredible experience filled with memorable teambonding activities. Over the course of five days, we engaged in various activities including food-making competition, pulling out the biggest radish, and participating in the local aboriginal song and dance.

One of the highlights was the Amazing Race-like treasure hunt where we worked together to solve clues and discover hidden gems in the heart of the city. Each clue unravelled a new layer of excitement and pushed us to think creatively. We navigated through narrow alleys, bustling markets, and historical landmarks, all while immersing ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Taipei.

The experience not only allowed us to view Taipei through a different lens, but it also brought our team closer, as we celebrated our collective successes.

Commemorating World Water Day with Waterways Cleanup

In commemoration of World Water Day, our team embarked on a waterways cleanup along the Kallang Basin route last Friday. Despite being a small group, we managed to collect 40 kg worth of trash, contributing to the preservation of our waterways. Singapore’s history with water is fascinating, transforming from a water-deprived nation to a global leader in water management.

Two fun facts about Singapore’s water:
1.     Two-thirds of Singapore’s land surface is used for water catchment.
2.     Singapore has implemented the Four National Taps strategy. These taps represent different sources of water: local catchment water, imported water, reclaimed water (NEWater), and desalinated water. This diversified approach reduces the country’s reliance on any single source and ensures a stable water supply even during periods of drought or disruption. This innovative strategy has been pivotal in ensuring Singapore’s water resilience.
